Why do I have dark period blood?

Q: My period is 5 days late, I am usually right on time. The blood that I am passing is very very dark. I am 32 years old. I don’t have any new symtoms, it is like a usual period, PMS, light cramping and just an overall crabby feeling. Is this something I should be worried about? I am not on birth control, but my boyfriend and I do use condoms. I took a pregnancy test after my 3rd day of missing my period, it was negative. Again is this something I should be worried about?

Q: I have had my period since I was 13, and I am 21 now. I got my period again yesterday and the blood is a really dark red to a plum color.. Almost appearing black.. It has always been a bright red to brown color. This dark color is new… Is this bad? Or normal

A: The black color could be clots or signs of either endometriosis or adenomyosis (endometriosis in the uterine muscle), miscarriage, polyps, hormonal changes, or fibroids. Temporary heavy flow may not be cause for concern but if you experience heavy cycles more frequently you should see your dr. A lot of women get used to heavy periods thinking they are normal but really unless if a dr. has told you there isn’t reason to be concerned you shouldn’t just let it go on as if nothing is wrong. Also if you have pain or cramping any other time then when you’re not having a period see your dr. Another reason clots form is when the flow is on the heaviest day, the anticoagulants help prevent the menstrual flow from clotting but during a heavier day there isn’t usually enough time for the anticoagulants to thin the blood out therefore resulting in clots. My first gyn told me I shouldn’t have pain during the month if it’s not related to mentstrual flow and he said I needed a laporoscopy to diagnose and treat endometriosis if found. I was told I indeed had it and that he lasered it out. He however did a disservice to me because he didn’t inform me that my fertility was at risk. After firing him and getting so fed up with the three hour long office waits to see him for only three to five minutes with very little to no explanation at all, I was told by my second awesome gyn that I shouldn’t wait more than two years from the diagnosis of endometriosis to start trying to get pregnant. Usually endometriosis is found in teens or younger women and it can appear anywhere else in the body not just the reproductive organs. If you don’t have endometriosis they may be blood clots either because you are bleeding heavier or when you go from a laying to standing position it may cause the blood to be all in one area and rather than coming out in thinner flow it may come out with clumps or clots in it. Yuck! Anyway after I had my second baby I was getting a lot worse and was told after the third baby that from the looks of the ultrasound it could be adenomyosis. I had clots ranging from many tiny ones to those the size of a strawberry to my fist pass and the pain was unbearable without prescription pain killers. There is no cure at this time for adenomyosis other than a hysterectomy but if you want any kids I also have heard from dr’s and websites that the fertility markedtly declines at or after the age of 27. Some girls want to wait till they finish college, get married, get a job, and then try to get pregnant but then they find out it’s a lot harder to get pregnant when they worried all of their life about being pregnant and it changing their future.

Dark period blood, possible side effect from taking metronidazole to treat BV?

Q: I went to my gyno for a pap smear almost two weeks ago, and it was discovered that i had BV. I was put on metronidazole (14 pill for 7 days), everything seemed to clear up, and my period came on time, but it was, and still is very dark dark red blood, which is not normal for me. Is this a possible side effect with taking metronidazole, an antibiotic? Has anyone experienced similar effects?

A: I have not found any evidence suggesting a change of colour of periods blood after metronidazole therapy.It is excreted through mother’s milk – so not recommended for lactating mothers,through saliva – hence the metallic taste in mouth,through urine – hence darker urine,through vaginal secretions – hence effective for treating tricomoniasis and BV but not through cyclic menstrual flow which is made up of blood,stripped off endometrium,mucus and an unfertilized ovum mainly.However these are reversible side effects and disappear within a day or two of stoppage of therapy.You should go back to your gyno for very very dark red blood.There can be various reasons for this.
