Why does my sisters dog smell the walls and corners constantly?
Q: My sister moved in with me at my house right after Thanksgiving, and brought along her 3 year old yorkie terrier. At my sisters previous residence, her dog would never smell the walls/corners of the house. But ever since my sister moved in with me, her dog will smell the walls/corners quite frequently. Now keep in mind, I have a 1 1/2 year old German Shepherd who does not smell the walls like her dog. Does anyone have any input on this situation. Thanks in advance.
A: You may want to have your sister’s dog’s eyes checked. Sometimes if they are losing sight, they use the walls to find their way around. When my kids were little, their babysitter had a maltese. I had occasion to visit her a few years later when the dog had become quite elderly. When I observed the dog walking along the perimeter of the room to go doors to other rooms, I asked her, “How long has Shatzie been blind?” She was shociked. She hadn’t really noticed the dog’s new pattern of getting form room to room. I picked the dog up and showed the owner that the dog was indeed blind through some simple visual screening tests.
