A: You head hurts because you're creating pressure in your head, neck & chest to get to phlegm out. It's an overuse of the surrounding musculature & created pressure in your sinuses. You need something stronger (codeine) to deal with your coughing. Your phlegm comes up any way, the cilia in your lungs brings it up. At least take it during the night, so you can have a sound sleep & build up your immune system. You also might have a sinus infection. If your doc. is treating you with antibiotics, both infections will be treated.
Why does my head hurt every time I cough?
Q: I've been sick for a couple of days runny nose, post-nasal drip, and a persistant cough. Every time I cough, the back of head has pressure. Not neccesarily hurting, just lots of pressure every time I cough. That just started today.
A: Cold and coughs can cause all sorts of secondary problems. Often when you have alot of mucous and you are forcing it up, it does put pressure on your muscles (particularly the back of your neck/base of skull). For me, my neck muscles become very tight and it feels like pressure.I will tell you that Mucinex (over the counter) will help to loosen the cough and it will not hurt nor will you feel as much pressure if you use this. This helps to make the mucous a lot more liquidy.
