Q: This a questions from my Anatomy & Physiology class; we’re learning about the integumentary system. At first I thought it had something to do with thick skin and thin skin and the layers of the epidermis, but that kinda left me at a dead end. Can anyone help me with this?
A: The relative density of nerve endings in one area compared to another would obviously effect the amount of pain one would feel when you receive the shot. Also, your idea of how thick the dermis was at that location is a good. I’ve heard many things; it depends on how muscly the person is, or it depends if you tense up when you get it done. My arms are fairly muscly for a 14year old girl, and i get quite nervous before jabs so i do tense up too. Are any of these true??

The thicker the meds, the more painful it is. The sites chosen might not be appropriate due to poor muscle mass. The injections is always given on the same site. Their threshold for pain might be poor. or low. It depends if they are nervous, anxious and anticipate the pain. It might be because they look at the injection as it’s being administered.
