Why are tears salty and different to water?
Q: Like the way they burn your face?
A: They are an ultrafiltrate of plasma (blood). As blood contains sodium (salt), so do tears. When the plasma is filtrated to turn it into tears, not all of the sodium is reabsorbed. Hence, tears taste salty.Tears do not contain urea. They contain sodium chloride, potassium, albumin and glucose. They also contain the immune cells lysozyme, and IgA, IgG and IgE.
If tears are salty, then why don't they hurt your eyes?
Q: When you taste tears, they're salty. Salt water will burn your eyes. But why not tears?
A: The answer has to do with relativity. Tears are the same salinity (salt content) as the fluid in and covering your eyes, therefor they are accustomed to it. When fluids enter your body that are either a greater salinity or lesser salinity than your body's natural salinity, then damage can potentilly occur. When, for example, you are given an IV to hydrate you, it is not pure water, but a saline solution. The solution is at the same salinity as your own body.
Why Are Tears Salty?
Q: I am an emotional bloke and virtually everyday I shed a few tears. AnyhowHave always thought…Why are tears salty? Is it because the salt in your tears acts as a cleaning agent to your eyes? Thanks
A: Basically, tears are salty because people are salty! That might sound like a silly answer, but it is the true answer. All cells in the body have a certain amount of salt in them (called osmolarity). The liquids surrounding the cell have the same amount of salt (called isotonic). If the liquid had more salt, water would rush out of the cells the cell would shrivel up. If the liquid had less salt, like pure water, the water would rush into the cell and the cell would pop. So you see, it is imporant that body fluids have just the right amount of salt, including tears!
