whats the spleen, and where is it located? Also, do you have to have a spleen in order to live?
Q: I am doing a project for scince in which we are making a wanted poster. I need to know what the spleen looks like, where its located, and why its nessacry and the things it does. Thank you
A: the spleen is a lymphoid organ, situated on the 9th, 10th and 11th ribs on your left side, laterally.it is nice to have a spleen, but you can live without it.if you look at it in vivo, it has the same colour of a kidney, and nearly the same shape. what is different, is that unlike the kidney, it is not bean shaped, ie it has no indented margin. it has an oval shape and it is fattened in the middle. another difference from the kidney is that its hilum (where vessels and lymphatics enter and emerge) is not situated at hte margin, but in the middle of the face facing the interior of the body.what is its function: it stores blood, and also filters it from pathogens. it removes worn out red blood cells also.hope that helped and good luck for your project!!!
Bad pain where spleen is located and mono symptoms?
Q: I know this question has been asked before but nobody really got any clear answers on it. So here goes. I am 15 year old male that has had symptoms of mono for a few days. on Wednesday i started feeling intermittent sharp pains in the area where my spleen is located and they have gotten worse since then, now its a sharp pain thats constant in the upper left area of my abdomen, under my left ribcage and a little down from there too, also in my back (around the spleen area as well) which indicates an enlarged spleen. From what ive heard it isint that uncommon for a spleen to rupture and 50% of all people with mono have an enlarged spleen. I just want to know on a scale of 1-10 what the pain would be if it ruptured/tore. Right now the pain for me is 6.5-7. If you need any more info let me know. Thanks.
A: FIRST things first, like seeing your doctor and getting some blood tests and a physical exam to make a correct diagnosis. Examination of a simple, stained blood smear is most helpful as is an E-B virus test of blood serum. At the same visit your doctor can palpate your stomach and feel for the a spleen and how large it may be. An enlarged spleen can produce discomfort and pain, while a rupture of the spleen is an acute surgical emergency which could cause sudden death from internal hemorrhage. Go now and get tested and examined. It could turn out to NOT be mono (infectious mononucleosis). Good luck. Be well.
