Where did STDs come from?
Q: For thousands of years, people had been having unprotected sex and didnt risk anything except pregnancy. I mean AIDS wasnt even around 100 years ago. How did STDs start? Did just ONE person get them and then spread them all over? And how did he/she get an STD to begin with?
A: Most STDs are very old, as old as humanity itself. Only a very few, such as HIV/AIDS, are new, likely having infected one human or a few when they butchered and ate primates infected with a related virus (SIV) that becomes much more virulent when it infects humans. The reason most STDs did not show up as much in days gone by is partly because of smaller group sizes, more isolated from one another so STDs could not spread so readily from group to group, and partly from very strict rules restricting sexual interactions within many societies. Imagine a society with the strictest rules of total monogamy, where every couple would married young, stay married for life, and never stray from the marriage. You can see that all STDs would die out and vanish from the population. Some animal species, including many migratory birds, are largely monogamous for life, and that makes it hard for STDs to take hold in their populations. The number of long-term monogamous relationships in human societies has dropped through the 20th century, the number of sexual partners for a significant fraction of the human population has increased, the age of first sexual interaction has decreased, and a wider set of sexual practices have become popular. All of those conditions are conducive to the spread of STDs, and the evolution of new STDs, and that is a large part of the reason they have become so prominent. Controlling and where possible conquering STDs is one of the great challenges for 21st century medicine and epidemiology.
