How can I treat an infected cartilage piercing?
Q: I got my cartilage pierced about a month ago and I got an infection because I was allergic to the metal earring so I changed it to a pure gold one but it is still infected. It was pussing and bleeding before (sorry for being gross) and it feels hard. I’ve been using salt water but I have heard that table salt isn’t good for it. So what should I use to treat it to make it go away?
A: You need to use a non-iodized sea salt. Just a pinch (around 1/4 teaspoon) to one cup of warm filtered or distilled water. If you can’t get ahold of that a contact lens cleaning solution that contains only purified water and sea salt or very diluted antibacterial, clear unscented liquid soap would be fine. Please don’t use witch hazel, as it is very harsh and will cause you a lot of discomfort and can strip the piercing of good cells trying to help the healing. Also no Bactine, peroxide or rubbing alcohol. You should be applying a hot compress to the area twice a day for around fifteen minutes each time, reheating the paper towel or cotton ball once the heat dissipates. I’m assuming your cartilage was gun pierced. Did you change the earring yourself? Was it properly sterilized before you had it replaced? If you were pierced with a needle by a professional I’d go back and have them take a look at it because infections can be serious if left untreated. You may also be having a reaction to the gold. I’m allergic to gold, even the purest gold. Titanium may be your best option. Don’t take the jewelry out. If it’s infected you could trap the infection under the skin and it could abscess.
Whats the worse that can happen to an infected cartilage piercing?
Q: My ear lobes have been pierced since I was a baby and I was thinking of getting a cartilage piercing. However, my ear lobes are quite sensitive and get infected from time to time but it’s nothing serious. What are the chances of my cartilage piercing if I do get one, become seriously infected? And what is the worse that can happen to the infection?
A: You could loose your ear. Seriously – it will go from “cauliflower ear” and shrivel into nothing and will need to be amputated. However, is your definition of “infection” correct? If it’s not red, swollen, hot to the touch, and oozing a yellow/green pus then it’s not infected, it’s irritation. If you go to an APP piercer and get it done properly (with a needle) and take care of it, your chances of infection are slim.
what should i do if i have an infected cartilage piercing???
Q: I went swimming in the ocean and i think the saltwater has affected my ear because it is pounding and painful i cant sleep on my right side because of it the ear seems to be puffy as well. and i wanted to know if it would be a good idea to take it out and clean it i cant seem to properly with it in. thank youwhat would i clean it with?
A: OK. First you shouldn’t swim with an unhealed piercing, you shouldn’t even take a bath with it – only showers. Letting it sit in dirty water is definitely bad. Secondly, do not take it out. If it’s infected then taking it out would mean the hole closing up and trapping the infection inside it which could cause an abscess and eat through your skin. Yuck. Thirdly, don’t put peroxide on it. It’s too strong for an open wound. It does kill bad bacteria, but it also kills the good, healing bacteria and you’ll end up with dead flesh. I’d recommend a sea salt soak. 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized salt in 250ml of boiled water. Let it cool down to say coffee-drinking temperature before soaking your ear in it. Just soak your in it for about 15-20 minutes, twice daily. Sea salt draws the infection out. And then use a q-tip/cotton bud to run around the rim of the piercing to get off any dried lymph/pus/blood there. Meanwhile, can you get to your piercer to get it looked at? If you got it gunned, you should be able to walk into any professional piercing studio and have them look at it for you (usually free of charge). They’ll be able to diagnose and treat it a bit better, having seen it. Hope this helps!
