When you crack your knuckles, what makes your knuckles crack?
Q:
A: There are gasses dissolved in the fluid. When you stretch the joint the volume increases and therefore the pressure in that volume decreases. This allows to gas to come out of the liquid. It makes a noise like opening a bottle of soft drink. This is also the same principle that gives divers the bends if they come up too quick. There is a name for the law, it is to do with dissolving gasses in a liquid under pressure. I am suffering a mental block, err henry’s law?? russels?? errr.. some plain name like that anyway
What makes the cracking sound when you crack your knuckles?
Q: Why must you wait a while before you can get that cracking again?
A: there are gases (nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide) located in the fluid (called synovial fluid) in between your joints. this fluid is not blood but a clear jelly-like substance that allows your joints to move w/out your bones rubbing against each other.when you push down on your knuckles to “crack” them, you stretch the joint capsule which causes the gases to be released-making the cracking noiseyou have to wait awhile before doing it again b/c the gases need time to build back upsome studies have shown that repetitive cracking of your knuckles can lead to weakness in grip and swelling of the hand over time but others say this isn’t harmful
