if my rabbits litter lives past 24 hours does that mean they will survive longer?
Q: my rabbit just had a litter of four on 1/20/07 and im not sure if she is feeding them. they have survived past 24 hours. im just not sure if she has fed them or should i go out and purchase means of feeding them myself? My feelings are telling me she has feed them due to the fact that they are still alive. But then again i dont know anything about rabbits!!
A: Rabbits are secretive. They will not sit in the nest for long periods of time because this will bring lots of rabbit smells to the nest and alert predators to the location of the babies. The mom will feed them when they need to eat but she wont spend a long long time in the nest. Thats why she lines the nest with her fluff. To keep them warm. IF this is her first litter then she might not be a great mom yet, but she is probably doing just fine. Babies will live several days after birth with out food, so no just living 24 hours doesnt mean they will live if shes not feeding them. Usually if a female that is not caring or feeding her kits, will kick the babies out of the nest and not bother to cover the babies with the hair when she leaves. Her nest will be un-kept and shabby. If her nest is snug and warm and fully covering the babies with hair. She is probably doing just fine. If you need to be assured, then move the hair aside dont touch the babies now, but just hold your hand above them and if there is warmth coming off and the babies look plump, and they are comfortably sleeping not squirming and kicking and making squeaky-mewling noises, then they are getting enough food. Just dont mess with mom and kids too much, rabbits can be fickle. If you have to feed them, dont use a bottle use an eyedropper, get cat replacement milk, add some white karo syrup and condenced sweetend canned milk. Mix it and warm it. Dont squeeze the milk in to the mouth fast, just one or two drops. If they are sucking it on there own only put a tiny amount in the dropper, cause rabbits tend to inhale (asperate) milk into there lungs, and all that hard work will be in vain cause they will get Pnumonia from the milk.ADDITIONAL INFO: To anyone saying not to handraise them they dies, what you said is not true. I have sucessfully raised 24 orphaned baby rabbits. You guys just dont know how to do it. Your forcing them and feeding them too much too fast. The point is that Rabbit females release milk very slowly, and they tuck the nippled behind the front teeth into the flap of there mouths, basically seeping the milk in slowly. Most of the babies made it to healthy adults and the females were good mothers. I would lose one or two in a litter which is normal, but the rest lived.
