Q: I am pretty sure that someone I love has this condition, but doesn’t realize it. He experiences extreme mood swings (manic and depressive), has the tendency to abuse alcohol, and is definitely appearing to get worse. He is currently unemployed, so has no medical insurance, and his unemployment income is barely enough for him to survive–so help would be difficult for him to afford. On top of all of this, he doesn’t think he has a chemical imbalance–he believes it’s up to him to make his life better. He’s a mess, honestly. I want to help him, but I don’t want to betray him or upset him.I have done extensive research and he fits pretty much all of the textbook definitions of bipolar disorder.Does anyone have any ideas on how to help someone understand how medication and/or counseling would really help them? A: Age? DANIEL’S PLACE would help and I wish there was one in every city. The hardest part is getting them to accept that they may need this kind of help. You can contact your local social services departments to inquire about support centers in your area. There are very few, if any support centers for Bipolar and schizophrenic youth or adults. There is one place in Santa Monica, Calif for young ages 18 and up that offers help in in all facets of life including a job search center, and it is non-profit, live-in or live-out I believe . It is called (google it) Daniel’s Place and it was started by a family who lost their son to suicide, to help others. The hard part would be to get him to go initially.
