A: There is no way to know how to rid yourself of heartburn unless we know the cause. There are medical conditions which cause heartburn, such as : Acid Reflux, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Hiatal Hernia, Ulcers, Asthma, Diabetes, Pregnancy Gastritis, Gastroparesis, etc ………Sometimes, it is just indigestion. You need to keep a diary for a month and every time you have heartburn write down what you have eaten that day or what activity you were engaged in. You need to find a pattern. If you discover that every time you eat tomatoes you get heartburn, stop eating tomatoes. You may discover it is not what you eat. You may, in the end, have to see a doctor. Heartburn can be a symptom of serious illness.

A: Ahhh – it sux having this…..first of all, identify the foods that give you the most problems & avoid them. For me it was chocolate, peanut butter, Fritos corn chips & cold fried chicken (tells you something about my eating habits, eh?). Also avoid mints – mint relaxes the esophagus & allows the acids to come up easier. Don’t lay down right after eating – stay upright for at least a coupla hours. Sleep with your head & shoulders elevated – horizontal positions allow acid to come back into the esophagus. Try OTC meds for acid relux, but if they don’t seem to help, seek the doctor’s help. This part was hardest – try to avoid foods & drinks with high acid content, especially sodas. The combination of acid & carbonation is too hard on the stomach. Good luck, Pete!!
