Is SIDS caused Toxic Gases in Mattresses?
Q: I was just Curious to see if anyone knows what causes SIDS(Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Most of what I ave read is that there is no known cause, but I have also read that there is reason to believe toxins in the mattress can cause deaths. Any IDEAS?
A: Well, there’s no known cause officially. But… having read about it a lot, some of the things that are considered suspects:-heavier toxic gasses in mattresses/blankets/stuffed animals (which is the reasoning behind putting the newborn in a crib from day one and on their back.)-inability for newborns to regulate their breathing effectively (it’s been observed that a newborn will stop breathing until they feel mom next to them breathe, then they will breathe… since most newborns are put into cribs from day one, it’s suspect.)-inability to straighten the airway properly.-something wrong with the brain.Things that seem to help:-pacifier.-babies on their backs or at the least on their side with nothing in front of the face.-specially made crib mattresses that don’t trap as much air or ‘toxic’ gasses.-staying in the room with mommy and daddy. Now, that can be in bed with them, it also can be in a bassinet or crib right next to their bed, even the ‘hearing’ of mommy and daddy breathing seems to help. Until the baby is at least 6 months old is the current recommendation.Personally I think there’s several causes so we’ll never find one overall cause.
Can SIDS be caused by a crib bumper on a 1year old?
Q: My son just turn 1. So i finally started to put him in his own room, in his crib. He use to sleep in my room in his pack play, because i was paranoid. but i bought a crib bumper, so he wouldnt be able to get stuck between the poles but i heard that bumper can cause SIDS on even a 2 year old. So im not sure what to do, or if i should believe that can really happen? Please help !
A: They’re not really sure what causes SIDS but the bumper could possibly cause suffocation. But he’s a year old and thats usually considered a safe point. He can hold his own head and roll over and adjust himself so likelyhood of suffocation or SIDS is considerably down from when he was a newborn. Try not to worry so much and use the bumper since it will protect him from rolling over in the middle of the night and bumping his head off the bars.
i wanted to be sure i was right before telling anyone that sids caused by smoke?
Q: i asked did cigarette smoke cause sids i got a lot of responses but i would like for these people who wrote ugly to know i donot smoke and would never put a baby at risk of smoking around it i have heard that it did and i heard that it didnt so when somwone asks a question there is no reason anyone should assume they are the one who is smoking thanks
A: They say there is a possible link to SIDS with smoking, however, they don’t know what causes SIDS. I have also read that the believe there is a link to increased amounts of Carbon Dioxide, which is why they suggest having a fan in the room while a baby is sleeping to circulate the air, and to keep the temperature cool. I know many people who smoked during their pregnancies and had healthy babies, I know people who did everything perfect by the book and gave birth to children with disabilities. One never knows. My son is 2 1/2 months old, I smoked on and off while I was pregnant ( I quit, but then had some rough family times, and started smoking again) my son was born perfectly healthy and weighed 7lbs 9 oz full term. I still continue to smoke, but only outside and never around the baby. I’m also a pediatric nurse who sees children with unexplained disabilities everyday, somethings in life you can’t control, even if everything is done “right”. Hope this helped.
