What are the chances of having a PKU baby?
Q: My Fiance has PKU he is 26 and he said that when we have a child our baby will have a 25% chance of having PKU. My mother read something online though saying that a child has to have 2 parents who carry the gene and I don’t carry the PKU Gene. I’m not really sure who is right and We don’t have an appt with his PKU Doctor for a another few months. Do you know?
A: I have pku, but i guess your fiance is confused. You need both parents to be a carrier to be able to produce an offspring with it. He might of meant all your kids will be carriers(since you aren’t). If i decided to conceive all my children would be carriers since that’s the only gene i will pass them(the mutated one). Do you follow what I’m saying? But if you were a carrier and didn’t know it, then you do have a 25% chance of having a child with pku. My two sisters have it too, except for my brother.
