How likely is it that I gave my girlfriend H.P.V.? Should I contact my exes?
Q: Girlfriend had a pap smear that detected pre-cancerous cell growth on cervix in April 07. We’ve been together since 8/06. No condom use. Assume she’s had healthy annual pap smears annually since 2001. My most recent sexual activity was within a long-term monogamous relationship ending 7/06; no condom use. Prior to 2001 I was promiscuous; no condom use. Her last sexual partner was in Spring ’05. Her sex partner was promiscuous; no condom use. Should I advise my ex to get a pap smear to be on the safe side? How likely is it that I am the H.P.V. carrier that infected my GF. Not looking to blame.
A: It is probably impossible to know for sure, especially since the both of you haven’t always used to condoms in the past. I’ve heard that the % of sexually active people w/ HPV is astronomical! My OBGYN told me that if you decide to be sexually active, you’re basically signing up for the “disease”.I was given a diagnosis at age 20 and had only been w/ two partners and both had been monogamous relationships. It’s hard to say where it came from, either the first boyfriend or second, but I don’t fault either of them because you take that risk when you decide to have sex. I’ve heard that condoms don’t always prevent it and that oral sex can transmit it.The research has been contradictory on HPV in the past. Six years or so ago, they said that it’s a life-long disease that is incurable. Now there’s studies showing that the body can get rid of it in some cases. Most girls I know (and ones that aren’t promiscuous) have had a diagnosis at some point. These days it’s a non-issue for most women, considering you take care of yourself and are checked regularly.I am sure you’ve heard of the HPV vaccination they’ve recently approved. It’s supposed to protect against many different strains of the virus. I would recommend all girls to have it in adolescence if it were up to me. At any rate, my doctor told me that it’s effective and they like to give the vaccination before the age of 26 ( I don’t know why that’s the magic #)Try not to be hard on yourself about this, and reassure your g/f that it will be okay. Just learn from it and as you know, use a condom EVERY TIME. Luckily I don’t have to worry about telling future partners because I am now engaged, but that is a judgement call that you both may be faced w/ at some time and no one can tell you what the right or wrong thing is to do except yourselves.
What is the cause of H.P.V.?
Q: My friend just told me that she has h.p.v. We don’t know what caused it to prevent me from getting. We are best friends and tell each other everything. This is an infected owrld we live in.
A: It’s an STD, so it’s given through sex or sexual acts, but it’s also a virus. Just know that there are other causes of cancer, and there are different symptoms of HPV. It can cause Genital warts, or it can cause nothing at all. It depends on the strand. You shouldn’t be able to get it from her unless you’re sharing… things you shouldn’t share. ;). As for getting it in general I’d use protection with every sexual partner, and try to have partners only when you’re committed to them and trust them, but life does happen and just know that it won’t end your life if you do happen to get it you just have to be more careful about things…
