Q: This summer, for my internship, I’m having to work almost all day in front of a screen. I seem to be suffering from some eyestrain and headache as a result. This job’s only for 3 months, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it through this summer at this rate. A: Hi Kevin–Thanks for the Best Answer nod over in Medicine; I’m answering your additional questions here because you don’t allow email or PM.Eye drops may not do anything for you if your eyes aren’t dry, but you might not realize that they are. When you work on a computer for a long time you tend not to blink enough, which can make your eyes feel sore. You might want to try and see if they feel soothing; at least you will have to stop staring at the computer to put them in. *g*It is hard to say what exactly you are straining without examining you, and I’m not an ophthalmologist. Part of what people usually mean when they say “eye strain” is that they feel like they’re having trouble focusing–really, only resting your eyes will help with that. Like I said in my other answer, even making sure you stop every 15 minutes or half an hour and taking a short break will help.The other thing is the adjustment of the lights and the monitor and your seat. If you are in any kind of an uncomfortable position, you will get muscles in your head and neck tightening up and giving you headaches and soreness. Make sure everything is in a comfortable position for you–that the monitor is high enough, there’s no glare on the screen, that you don’t have to lean forward or strain to reach the keyboard or see the screen.I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to try and “adjust” to working for 8 hours straight in front of a computer. You really just need to make sure you get up and move around a little and give your eyes a break. The good news is that this kind of eyestrain is not supposed to have any long-term consequences–at least, according to my attendings on my last ophtho rotation.Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon!

Q: Hello,I am a web developer, so I need to spend a lot of time on the computer. I have very good vision and I don’t wear glasses, and I want to keep it that way. I’d like to know how I can reduce eyestrain during the long periods that I need to spend on the computer.
A: Best advice is to work in a room well lit with natural light. That way the eyes aren’t continuing to focus on a single bright area but everything is kept neutral.Turning the brightness and contrast down a little on your monitor is also a possibility. Whenever I’ve had to use the computer with a headache I found that it helped not to strain my eyes.But most of all I would take frequent, small breaks. I know it can be difficult if you’re on a roll and you need something completed but it’ll stop the buildup of strain in your eyes. Just something like a few minutes or so after every 20 just to focus on something less strenuous and to let your eyes relax. Maybe stretch, get a drink, go to the toilet.Hope this helps!

A: Whatever you feel most comfortable with.I always have used my computer pretty well in the dark and it never bothers me. I’m on it 6 – 8 hours a day ( at least ) for the last 12 years.I just have a small lamp over the keyboard at night.The important thing is to look away from the screen often and keep it 28 to 30 inches away.
