Q: A few days ago I was feeling like I wasted the last 2 years of my life. Things are cleared up now though and my plans are back on track but it caused me to have a serious panic attack or so I think it was one.I was circling the room feeling like I was in a cross road not knowing which way to go and saying the f word constantly after every direction I would face. My nerves became uncontrollable. My stomach was forcing me to try and vomit. I was constantly blinking. The main thing though, I could think normally but I was unable to control more than one part of me at once. I was thinking fine but my nerves weren’t in control anymore. This never really happened to me to this extent at least. My brain felt seriously damaged and was constantly hurting. My parents are divorced and I can’t wait to get out of my step mom’s house. After feeling like I wasted the 1st 2 years of college I felt like things didn’t go as planned and I’ve been lying to myself in some way through hard work and dedication. I’ve obtained over 50 credits and I have a high GPA so far. But I was confused a few days ago about something and caught up in a whirl wind of agony thinking I lost everything I was fighting for.
A: hi matt, it sounds like you may indeed have had a panic attack but i wouldn’t worry about it too much at the moment. most people will experience a couple of panic attacks in their life without it ever developing into a problem, it seems to be a kind of normal reaction when all of a sudden we feel overwhelmed with stress and worry. if you ask around i think you will find that quite a few people have had a similar experience to you. if you think that everything is back on track then i think you will be fine, you seem to be very sensible and have put it in your past already along with working on getting all your plans back together again which is very positive and reassuring 🙂 if however you were having these attacks on a regular basis or found yourself constantly anxious and unable to recover properly from the panic then it would be time to go to your doctor for a chat. if it helps there should be a college counsellor who you can go to see for free and talk to about this, it can really help to talk about it and about why you were so stressed in the first place. for stress taking a vitamin B complex is also a good idea, the B vitamins soothe and calm your nervous system and they are very important for good mental health. i take a B complex with magnesium when i’m having a rocky patch. ask in your local health food shop or pharmacy for a good brand (a B complex means you’re taking all the B vitamins at once rather than taking just one of them as they are all important). also making sure that you get good exercise and eat properly is very very important for good mental health, don’t underestimate the power of a healthy lifestyle as these things are a major influence on how you feel. ok i’ll stop waffling! hope you stay strong and keep on fighting xx
