Q: My step son is 9 years old and has had behavoral problems for the 7 years that I have known him. He just had a meeting with a doctor who says he is borderline autistic. What does this mean, I read the stuff on the internet, but looking for someone with personal advice. He is still very defiant and rude, how can we help him, without trying to blame the autism for the behaviors. I”m open to suggestions if anyone has any advice.
A: That he has features of an autistic spectrum disorder, the medical diagnosis is PDD.NOS. Situational autism is sometimes used as well. Try to get some social skills training implemented by the school. Also try the book by Dr. Jed Baker, “The social skills picture communication book”. It didn’t include asperger’s til 1995. It also currently doesn’t include HFA or high functioning autism, but clinicians, psychologists and neurologists all use this term as well as MFA and LFA. The DSM-V which isn’t out yet is supposed to differentiate the PDD’s better.TO HAPPY: PDD.NOS is part of the autistic spectrum, is features not enough to meet criteria and is in the DSM-IV-TR

Q: My friends son has been diagnosed with autism. I’ve been thinking about it and I don’t really know what it means. Is it learning difficulties or disability? Do kids grow out of it?
A: “Autism” means a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three, that adversely affects educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with autism are engagement in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences. It varies in severity from person to person. Some function quite well while others need routines and rituals to cope with daily life. I have a cousin who is pretty severely autistic and he has a hard time interacting with people socially. He is very timid and has to have everything follow certain patterns. Have you ever seen the movie Rain Man with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman??
