Q: I study japanese but i’ve been so discriminated by them….so they make me really depressed.. i’ve been depressed for years because of them. they always love white , want to talk with whites, i’m minority and i don’t speak like wht they see in movies and they keep putting me down( they don’t say it but i feel it). anyways , i feel really bad about them.But yet i like learning the language. But then because there’s always some relation to the people i get sad and depressed. In fact i haven’t studied diligently fr like 2 years( i studied for 3 years before that) because i keep feeling sad and depressed knowing that the Japanese hate me. What to do?no I’m not saying i feel bad about them discriminating my japanese. They discriminate me because of my English. In other words, they want me to speak like white people in order to believe im really american and that i’m worth their friendship

A: I’m willing to bet you are generalizing. Maybe they think it’s funny how you pronounce some of the words. Ignore them. It’s certainly nothing to get depressed over. There are a lot worse things in this world to be depressed over than someone making fun of you or hating you because you’re trying to learn the language. You will only better yourself in the end by learning another language. When I was a child, I spoke French. When I started speaking English, kids laughed at the way I pronounced words but I didn’t care. I looked at it as a learning process. Now, I have no accent but people always tell me that I’m very articulate. No harm, no foul. Please don’t let something like that get you depressed because many minorities have overcome what ignorant people say and do. So you can too. There will always be people who are prejudice against another because of race, creed, or color, they’re the losers, not you.
