What are other causes of canine staph infections due to a skin rash other than allergic reactions?
Q: My daughter’s dog (a boxer/collie mix) was diagnosed as having a staph infection. The dog has a rash on her skin but no other symptoms other than scratching. The dog does not have any fleas and is an indoor dog for the most part (goes on walks to take care of business). The vet indicated that if the cause of the staph was not from fleas, something really serious was wrong. We’re wondering what else could cause this? The vet prescribed a number of different antibiotics to administer as well as an injection of another type of antibiotic. The dog is approximately 1 year old and appears healthy otherwise. She was also recently spayed.
A: Staph is a kind of bacterial infection that’s why your vet gave you antibiotics. Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections not allergic reactions.Your dog just got an infected scratch or wound just like people can get, and it became contaminated with Staph, just like people experience.Staph is everywhere. It’s a very common infection and is generally easily treated if the animal is in good health otherwise.Just be thankful that you got it treated in time because if you hadn’t noticed it for a while and it had a chance to grow it could spread to other parts of her body and could become a worse infection that would be harder to treat and could possible cause some damage.Thank goodness that you are an attentive owner.
What causes staph infection in 9 month old baby?
Q: This is not my child. I am a worried aunt. The baby ran a high fever for a day and a half, started vomiting, and had watery stool. After 3 days in the hospital they decided he has a staph infection. The child does not go anywhere and nobody comes over to his house. His twin sister did not get any from him or any illness when he did. Could poor housekeeping cause this in a baby? Did he get into something when he was not being watched? Bottom line, I love my niece and nephew and I need to know if this baby got sick because his parents or is it something that just happens.Let me restate that the child does not leave the house. He gets out maybe every few weeks. He has not been anywhere to get it. He did not have any scratches or cuts that I have seen. I hope it is something as simple as that, but I am really worried that it came from his home. I kept the other baby all weekend and when I went to get her clothing I was absolutely shocked at the condition of the house. It was horrible. I would not stay there let alone my infant. NO WAY!!! I just don’t see how it could be healthy. If it is something that he did not get from home I will be relieved. That would mean that his living conditions are not as bad as they look.
A: Staph infection can be caused by almost any kind of puncture wound, scratch, or small break in the skin. It could have been ingested, either from contaminated food, breastfeeding, contaminated bowl or spoon. It’s really a common infection that nearly everyone carries on their skin. I hope he is going to be ok.
