What bacteria infections can cause congested pharynx + enlarged tonsils that lead to Neutrophilic leukocytosis?
Q:
A: Mononucleosis
Why is it that stress causes sickness? (Immunology)?
Q: I’m doing a presentation on leukocytosis (significant increase in neutrophil count)… I’ve been thinking of possible questions people might ask, and I can’t figure out one of my own. If neutrophil count increases during a stressful experience, including exercise, why is it that sickness is associated with stress? Could it be a lack of proper nutrition? What other factors could there be? (Anything specific?)
A: When you’re stressed, your adrenals produce glucocorticoids, which act as negative feedback on your immune response. If this persists for too long, you’ll be more prone to infections. Simply, that how you’re usually sick right after a stressful period: your gluco levels get back to normal and your immune system turns on full blast. In a simple nut shell that’s it.
How to distinguish between leukemia and Effexor XR side effects?
Q: I have several side effects of Effexor XR which coincide with symptoms of leukemia. Namely leukocytosis, lymphadenopathy, headaches every day, fatigue and night sweats. Is there any way to know which is the culprit? I’m 27 and on birth control, so menopause isn’t likely to be causing the headaches or night sweats. Serious replies only, please.
A: I am currently on Effexor XR and suffered from headaches and night sweats for the first few months of taking it. I have also suffered from extreme fatigue since i began taking them 6 months ago. Leukocytsis and lymphadenopathy are infrequent side effects to the drug, which means approximately 1 in 100 people will suffer these effects. It is extremely likely that effexor is the cause and not leukemia. Although you should probably go to the doctor if these symptoms continue and try a different anti-depressant.
