A: Newborn acne is caused by the excess hormones from the mother coming out of his skin, and nothing but waiting will make it go away. Please do not put any creams, oils, lotions, etc. on his skin…this will do nothing more than irritate it and cause him to be uncomfortable.Also, a newborn baby does NOT need a bath every day. If you want to take a damp wash cloth and wring it out and wipe him off, that’s recommended, but do not put him in the bathtub full of water. This will severely dry out his skin and cause his umbilical cord stump to stay moist, and it won’t heal properly.

A: My daughter was born last July, and about two or three weeks later she developed quite a bit of acne on her cheeks. I was really concerned about it, wondering if I should put something on it, so I asked the pediatrician and he said just to leave it alone. He said that if you put any sort of ointment over the affected area, it could clog her pores even more, making it harder to get rid of. It ended up completely going away after just a few weeks!
