Q: I know that ear infections are real coman in children, but you don’t hear much about adults getting them. My mother has a horrible ear infection. She went to the dr on saturday, and was put on antibiotics, but her ear still hurts really bad. Its also been draining lots for 3 days. I’m worried about her, my mother has never been one to get sick. Also, she had been running a fever of 101 for three days. Is there some kind of underlining cause that can cause this?Thanks

A: Usually it is from water sitting in the ear canal. She should go back to the doctor now. I got one frm not draing my ears well after a shower one night. I usualy shower in the AM, but showered before i went to bed. From sleeping on one side, the water was able to leak further into my ear & sit there most of the night. I am a side sleeper. I had to go onto antibiotics too, but it went away fairly quickly.

A: Often people with chronic ear infections have a problem with the size of the tubes in their ears. Better to use a hairdryer on warm and dry the canal that way.Most infections clear themselves. You should wait a day or two before going on antibiotics. If the pain is gone it will likely clear on it’s own.
