Q: I know it’s a silly question, but recently the girls in my school have had their jabs to protect against cervical cancer. And it got me thinking: what would happen if a man got that jab? Would it have no affect at all? Or would it have some horrible malforming side effects?Preferably I’d like an actual medical opinion rather than just a thought.
A: In an ideal world both men and women would get the vaccine, this would progressively reduce the potential pool of HPV infection. There was a similar situation for many years with Rubella immunisation, it was only given to girls, now it is given ta all within the MMR vaccine.

Is cervical cancer the worst that can happen to someone with HPV?
Q: I WAS JUST WONDERING WAS CERVICAL CANCER THE WORST THING THAT A PERSON CAN GET FROM HPV???
A: HPV is a common virus that infects the skin and mucous membranes. There are more than 100 types of HPV. Some types cause common warts, such as those found on the hands and feet. These strains are spread through skin-to-skin contact, and it is possible to get these common warts after sharing towels or other objects with a person who has warts. Approximately 30 types of HPV are spread only through direct genital contact. These “genital” type of HPV are either “high-risk” or “low-risk.” High-risk HPV can lead to cervical cancer if the infection persists. Low-risk HPV does not cause cancer, but can cause genital warts. HPV by itself is not a disease. Most infections go away or are suppressed by the body without causing any symptoms or health effects. So, unless you develop any of the problems mentioned above, the only way to know whether you have HPV is by being tested.
