What are the odds of me getting genital herpes when my boyfriend has cold sores?
Q: My boyfriend performed oral sex on me last night, and today he found he has 2 cold sores. I want to know what the odds are of me getting genital herpes or if it’s even possible. He doesn’t have genital herpes by the way.
A: There is no way to accurately give you the odds or chances of you contracting genital herpes from your boyfriend giving you oral sex. There are too many factors and variables. If your boyfriend did have cold sores when he gave you oral sex though, there is a chance you will contract genital herpes. Herpes can be spread from the mouth to the genital area and vice versa through oral sex. BOTH genital herpes and cold sores can be caused by either herpes simplex virus 1 or herpes simplex virus 2. Using condoms and dental dams when you are having oral sex can HELP prevent the spread of herpes, but condoms/dental dams are not 100% effective. Abstinence is the only thing that is truly 100% effective. If you are concerned you have contracted herpes you can always go to your doctor and get tested. Good luck to you!
what are the odds of getting herpes if partner is not haveing a outbreak.?
Q: i was drunk one night and made a poor choice. i slept with a girl that claimed she didnt know she had herpes. she was not on a outbreak. its been 15 days and i have had no symptoms at all. iam going to the doctors this week but what are the odds they i have them now?
A: A study was done with couples where one had the herpes virus and the other did not. I won’t go into the details (you can read about them by following the link) but the infection rate was roughly 2%.Realize that the doctor won’t be able to tell you much at this point unless you are having an outbreak. It’s too early for a blood test to tell you much, and a swab test isn’t valid unless you have a sore. Also, I’ve heard some doctors – particularly general practitioners who don’t do a lot of gynecological / STD stuff – provide some inaccurate information. So double check what your doctor has to say.I’ve put a link to a reliable source of information about herpes – just in case your doctor says something wacky like “There’s no way you could catch herpes this way” or “You definitely have herpes at this point.” Good luck.
what are the odds of getting genital herpes from someone with a cold sore after oral sex?
Q: if you know any statics of herpes being transfered, it would be appreciated so at least i have an idea
A: Put it this way, over half of new genital hepres infections are caught form receiving oral sex from a partner that gets cold sores. And most of those were caught when the partner didn’t currently have a cold sore but was ‘asymptomatically shedding’ the virus. 70% of herpes infections are caught from a partner not experiencing symptoms.I caught genital herpes from receiving oral sex from a partner that got cold sores, as did my sister and another friend. None had symptoms. I knew my boyfriend’s cold sores could give me genital herpes, but we thought they were only infectious when he atually had one, not in between. He hadn’t had one in 6 months when I caught it, and didn’t have one after either.Oral herpes (usually caused by hsv-1) is infectious about 18% of the time – what most people don’t realise is that it is actually the most infectious form of herpes, more than genital hsv-2 for example. It is infectious around 10% of the time when no symptoms are present. If your partner already gets cold sores, or is one of the 8 out of 10 people infected with oral herpes whether or not they get outbreaks (cold sores) they are highly unlikely to get genital herpes from receiving oral sex, because they already have the virus somewhere else on the body (the mouth) and so will have built up an antibodies to that virus that should prevent a genital infection.
