A: Canker sores (or apthous ulcers) have no known cause, although many have been postulated. There is some evidence that the toothpaste component lauryl sulfate can be a factor in some cases – in which case there is a toothpaste called Biotene which is free of this ingredient. This has worked well for a few of my patients. For relief of pain, buy a corticosteroid ointment in a waterproof base called Kenalog in Orabase (Australia). It may be called differently in US but the active ingredient is triamcinalone. Your pharmacist would know it.To apply, pull out your lip and dry off the ulcer with a tissue. Using your little finger, smear a small amount of ointment on the ulcer. Don’t rub it in or it will flake apart.Do this 2x daily after meals and brushing so that it can remain undisturbed. The pain will be relieved quickly, and the ulcer will heal much faster than usual 10-14 days.Unfortunately, it does not stop later recurrence.
