Are there any other signs of skin cancer besides a mole changing appearance?
Q: I have a mole on my stomach which has changed in appearance, it used to be raised and is now flat, it also has uneven edges and has a red/pink ring around it. It has been like this for a while as I kept forgetting about it. It doesnt itch and is not sore or irritating. I have a appointment with the doctor on Friday but after looking into it on the internet am getting really worried, are there any other signs of skin cancer I should be looking out for?
A: There are many things to look out for but the main three are:1. Change in edges (irregular border)2. Change in size3. Change in colorIts appearance can vary, but the first sign can be a small, smooth, shiny, pale or waxy lump; a firm red lump; a lump that bleeds or develops a crust; or a red spot that is rough, dry or scaly. What should you do? Call your doctor if you're at all concerned, or if you notice an asymetrical mole, a mole with an irregular border, a mole that has changed color, or a mole that has a diameter greater than five millimeters (the size of a pencil eraser). Not all mole changes signal melanoma, but it's important to have any changes checked out early. Many doctors like to examine any skin discoloration or growth. The worst that can happen is that your doctor takes a little time to reassure you that all is well, and the best is that this exam may save your life. Here's what to expect: Your doctor will examine the area of concern, as well as other areas of your skin and decide whether the skin growth can be watched for awhile, or whether a skin biopsy is in order (that means taking a piece of the tissue, or removing the whole area). The tissue is then sent to the lab.If the results are positive for skin cancer, treatment will depend upon whether the cancer is a nonmelanoma (basal cell or squamous cell), or a melanoma. Other types of skin cancer may be identified, but once skin cancer is diagnosed, more tests will be done to see if it has spread.
What are the signs that a mole could be skin cancer?
Q: When it comes to medical stuff, I don't know so much. but I'm terrified to death off cancer. And I have this mole on the palm of my hand (strange place for a mole, isn't it?) that I've had ever since I can remember. And I recently noticed that it's losing its perfectly round shape. A little chunk of it is gone in the corner. I also realized tat whenever I pet the dog of whom the family I babysit on the head, he tries to nip the palm of my hand. I never thought anything about it, I thought it's just a game he likes to play, but is it possible that an untrained dog can sniff out cancer? Am I just being paranoid? Can you have sakin cancer in a spot that is not normally exposed to te sun? Can some one who is medically educated please set me straight?
A: Definitely have it examined by a doctor. Changing size and shape of a mole, especially if the color and shape become unsymmetrical, can indicate cancer. And some dogs can detect the chemical changed smells of cancer. They did a study with dogs detecting bladder cancer several years ago. Or he could just not like you to pet him.Have it checked, have it removed if it really worries you. And yes you can get skin cancer on non sun exposed spots, they get more light than you realize. It can run in families, too. It runs in mine. My grandma died from a spot that wasn't treated properly and metastasized. My dad did a lot of farm work for decades not wearing sunscreen and not always a hat or shirt. He has spots removed from his scalp, chest, back and arms about 2x per year because he has damaged his skin so bad. UV lights can cause more damage to his skin. He had to wear sunscreen on his face when he worked in a nursing home that had UV lights. But that is extreme and doesn't effect the average person, for him its just that his skin is so badly damaged from all those years in the sun.
What are some signs of skin cancer and how do you know what a mole is?
Q: Yesterday I went to an amusement park and even though I was wearing a t-shirt, the little freckle thing (I don't know if it is a moe because it is small yet it is bumpy like braile) on my shoulder seems to be bigger and it is more darker. The skin around my freckel is peeling, and I don't know how I could of been burnt since it doesn't hurt or anything. Please help!!!! I'll add any questions you type in as details... PLEASE!
A: Remember the basic A,B,C's of skin cancer:A: Asymmetry. One half of the mole doesn't match the other half.B: Border irregularity. The edges are ragged, notched, or blurred.C: Color. The pigmentation is not uniform. Shades of tan, brown, and black are present. Dashes of red, white, and blue add to the mottled appearance. Changes in color distribution, especially the spread of color from the edge of a mole into the surrounding skin, also are an early sign of melanoma.D: Diameter. The mole or skin growth is larger than 6 mm, or about the size of a pencil eraser. Any growth of a mole should be of concern.I've had skin cancer removed from my nose that was about the size of a pencil eraser. Not a big deal at all. You should see a doctor who can tell you whether you should be concerned or not.
