A: Two of my kids had chronic ear infections and though occasionally they’d get a fever, usually the only tip off was that they woke up crying hard in the middle of the night for a couple of nights in a row. They did not hold or play with their ears (though I know some kids do), and they were always totally healthy except for a sniffle during the day. I totally missed the first couple ear infections (I thought we just had bad sleepers on our hands), and felt terrible about it. Now I go to the doctor and they think I’m nuts because I say I want my child checked out because they didn’t sleep well and I’m sure they have an ear infection even though they have no other symptoms. I’m always right and I think I’m starting to get some respect over there. 🙂 You’ll learn your own child’s symptoms, but if he hasn’t acted like this before it’s prudent to go get him checked out.
