what are the early symptoms of mono?
Q:
A: The initial symptoms of mono are: * a general lack of energy or malaise, * a loss of appetite, and * chills. These initial symptoms can last from one to three days before the more intense symptoms of the illness begin. The more common intense symptoms include: * a severe sore throat, * fever, and * swollen glands (lymph nodes) in the neck area.It is typically the severe sore throat that prompts people to contact their doctor. What are the signs of mono?In addition to a fever from 102 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, the most common signs of mono are: * a very reddened throat and tonsils and * swollen lymph glands in the neck. The tonsils have a whitish coating in at least one-third of the cases. The spleen (sometimes referred to as the body’s biggest lymph node), is an organ found in the left upper abdomen underneath the rib cage which becomes enlarged or swollen in about 50% of patients with mono. An enlarged liver may also occur. About 5% of patients have a splotchy red rash over the body, which has a similar appearance to the rash of measles.
How long before symptoms show themselves is mono contagious?
Q: I think I came in contract with someone with mono in early to mid September and I became symptomatic in early to mid November. Approximately when did i become contagious?
A: You can become contagious as early as 7 weeks before you come down with symptoms.More Information:Once someone gets mono, the virus stays in that person’s body for life. But this doesn’t mean that if you’ve had mono you are always contagious. Over time, the virus becomes less contagious. Eventually, it’s very unlikely that a person who had mono will transmit the virus to someone else.People who have mono can be contagious from the time they first become infected with the virus. But they may not know that they have the virus in its early stages. That’s because it takes a while from the time a person is infected to the time symptoms of mono show up — about 4 to 7 weeks in fact. (This is called the incubation period.)To make it even more confusing, some people can carry the virus without having any symptoms of mono, so they might not know they have the infection at all.Mono needs to run its course naturally over about 2 to 4 weeks — and some people feel tired for several weeks longer. It’s important to take care of yourself if you have mono and get lots of rest.Doctors and researchers aren’t exactly sure how long someone with mono stays contagious after symptoms are gone. But it’s generally believed that a person can spread the infection for many months after the symptoms are completely gone — some studies show as long as 18 months. But after that, it’s very unlikely that a person will give someone else monohttp://kidshealth.org/teen/infections/common/mono_contagious.html
How long should Mono symptoms last? ?
Q: I was diagnosed with mono in early July. Its been about four months now and I am still not feeling good. I am not as fatigued and tired as I had been (thank god), but my muscles ache a ton! Right now its hard for me to even stand for a period of time, write, or even type. I am really anxious also and have a mild depression. Im only 17 and used to be really active and have stopped for a period of time because of mono. Are these symptoms normal? How long should these symptoms last? What can I do to alleviate some of these symptoms? I do take my multivitamins by the way also. Please help. Thanks.
A: they usually last a month or so, if you are still not feeling well after 4 months you need to go back to the doctor. Did you take antibiotics for it? You may need another round to clear it up completely.
