All the Symptoms of Hypoglycemia but No Proof?
Q: I’m pretty positive I have hypoglycemia…I’ve read into it and have most of the symptoms. However I’ve gotten blood work done, and it didn’t show up on the results. The doctor said I’m fine…My friend said this could be because my levels were normal at the time of the test, and that I shouldn’t eat sugar for a while then get my blood work redone. Could there be something else wrong, or is this true?
A: You can buy a glucometer at any drugstore with no prescription. Just get the cheapest generic or drugstore brand and that will be fine. Costs like $30 for a kit. Read the directions it is easy to do. Little children with diabetes can do it easily. Then you simply carry the meter around and test in various conditions. First thing waking up, after a meal, when you haven’t eaten and so on. If it stays above 75 then you aren’t hypoglycemic. If it is lower than that, document the time, and the conditions. Bring your meter with you to the Dr. and they can download and verify the reading. You do have to poke your finger or forearm but it isn’t that bad. I don’t use the snappy thing, I just take the lancer and gently poke my finger just barely enough I can squeeze out one drop of blood.
*please answer* I am experiencing hypoglycemic symptoms. Do I have hypoglycemia or is it all in my head?
Q: For a while, I have been very hungry between meals; to the point of not being able to concentrate. I get headaches, varying in intensity, and I feel weak. Do I have hypoglycemia? Could it be anemia? *my mom has iron deficiency anemiaI don’t want to say anything before I’m more informed if I actually have something, because I don’t want to seem like a hypochondriac.I will choose a best answer.
A: Well of course the best thing you can do is see a doctor, but i am willing to give you my non-professional opinion (although i am a pre-med student who has dealt with hypoglycemia most of my life). During these spells of being hungry and weak do you feel light headed or do you feel “brain-fog?” Does the problem typically occur after eating something high in sugar or startch? Does caffiene or alcohol make the problem worse? If your answer to any of those is “yes” then i would think it is quite likely you have it. I just can’t positively assert that you do with the symptoms of being hungry and feeling weak. Although, i have had points in time where i felt so weak all i wanted to do was lay around, and i’m a competitive long distance runner, so this isn’t a good thing!I find it interesting that your mom has iron deficiency anemia. I know that people with a gluten intolerance can acquire iron deficiency anemia and they can also aquire hypoglycemia (although not very common). Maybe you both have gluten intolerance since it is genetic??? But that is a huge stretch knowing very little of any of her symptoms and all of yours! Typically Hypoglycemia doeasn’t show up on it’s own, usually there is an underlying cause. For me it is celiacs disease, which is a gluten intolerance. For anyone it could be some form of a food allergy, an adrenal or thyroid disorder, or many other possibilities. Although, with the amount of sugar and processed foods out there today it wouldn’t surprise me if people can acquire it without an underlying condition. It is important that you realize that the diet is not the opposite as that for a diabetic, it is the exact same. Trying to fix hypoglycemia by taking in a bunch of sugar is not the way to take care of it (although if you fel like you are about to pass out it is your best quick fix). The body is hypoglycemic because it reacts to sugar in the digestive system by pumping out waaaay too much insulin. So in order to properly treat hypoglycemia you need to regulate the amount of sugars/simple startches that enter your digestivve tract in a given time. So you should eat 4-6 small meals a day and your intake of protien and GOOD fats should be increased and carbs lowered. Try to do whole grain carbs, although, this ended up making me feel worse because there is a lot of gluten in whole grains and as it turns out i am gluten intolerant. There is no cure other than changing your diet (for both of the diseases i’ve mentioned) So the best thing you can do to check for hypoglycemia is to change your diet and see how you feel. It’s likely that if you have hypoglycemia you should be able to tell. Just drink a sugary pop with caffiene in it and if your blood sugar crashes within a couple of hours (get really light headed) then i am willing to bet you are indeed hypoglycemic. I can’t make it an hour after doing this. As i said before, a doctor is the best person to get advice from (although it took 2 doctors to diagnose me with hypoglycemia and a few more until we found out i have celiacs, so even doctors aren’t perfect).I hope you get this worked out! Good luck!!!
i have the symptoms of Hypoglycemia but my blood tests are negative?
Q: Ive had the relevant tests but my doctors assures me i’m not diabetic. Could i be Hypoglycemic though? I imagine he would have metnioned it had i been – but he didn’t despite the fact i have all of the symptoms. So my question….Can you just be temporally hypoglycemic to the point where some minor dietary changes – eating more and frequently, less sugar, etc would clear all the symptoms?
A: You can pick up a glucometer at the drug store to check your blood sugar when you are having symptoms of low blood sugar. You can document these readings and take them back to your doctor during your visit. If you find that your blood sugar readings are normal despite the feeling of low blood sugar, it could be a number of causes, including stress/anxiety.It is entirely possible that your blood sugar is in fact low when you are symptomatic. The blood tests at the doctor won’t pick this up if your blood sugar is not low at that moment the blood is drawn. A glucometer will tell you immediately and at the time of symptoms if your blood sugar is low or not.
