Easy to cure: Selsun Blue shampoo. Smear it on affected areas. Let it dry and sleep on it. Wash away in the morning shower. 2-3 sessions will do it. The color will return to normal with time.

(Phew…) I believe that it is tinea versicolor (a skin fungus that is harmless and non-contagious. However, it effects the color of the skin and prevents even tanning.). I have been treating with an OTC athlete’s foot medication – I believe Tinactin. It has been 5 days and I really haven’t seen a noticeable difference. How can I speed up the process? I heard Selsun Blue works if left overnight. Any suggestions please? It is sandal weather and I am self-conscious about this.

A: One of the best ways to help get immediate relief is using Lamisil in the spray bottle. The cream and other versions didn’t seem to work very well. I had it for years. Make sure to wash your feet every day and spray with the Lamisil as often as you can remember to. I would also see a doctor. They have great pills out to get rid of it.

You can take oral anti-fungal pills like one answerer suggested, you can use selenium sulfide shampoos but you must realize something. Tinea versicolor is everywhere. Some people’s immunes systems just don’t recognize this form of yeast as “foreign” and therefore don’t fight it! The research shows that people like you are able/willing to live in “harmony” with this form of yeast. You will need to treat yourself about once every 9 – 12 months with one of those anti-fungal pills (like fluconazole) and then use selsun blue whenever you use a shampoo. Just rub it on your skin in the shower and let it sit undisturbed for 5 full minutes. You will get better if you work hard enough at it. Good luck.
