Would you adopt a child even knowing he´s got a mental disease, like autism?
Q: Would you face this task? Would you renounce your life for this purpose?
A: Yes, and I have adopted a special needs child. Every child in the world deserves a place to call home, regardless of their disability. Most states will help with finances for a child who requires special medical attention or special programs so money should not be an issue when considering a special needs adoption. However, availability to doctors or programs could be a legitimate consideration. Please keep in mind that there are no one is “perfect”. Every child has a problem in one way or another – some are just more pronounced than others. But a child is a child and should not be “unadoptable” because of something they have no control over.

If parents’ families have a history of mental disease, will kids get it too?
Q: This is a pretty serious question; obviously I am not relying solely on yahoo answers but a lot times people here have good insights! My fiance and I are both well-adjusted people but we both come from families with a strong history of mental illness. I am wondering if the combination of our families would put any children we might have at high risk for such disorders. Here is a list of what my family has:addiction (pretty wide spread on both mother’s and father’s side)schizophrenia (one uncle)OCD (sister and uncle)depression and anxiety (a number of relatives)His family members have a history of:depression and anxiety (several people in his family)addiction (several people in his family, including siblings)uncle with severe pyschosis (not sure if I called that the right thing–his uncle is similar to my schizophrenic one, and is unable to take care of himself)some form of mental retardation (it’s his great aunt, and they didn’t really have a diagnosis when she was a kid but seems like severe autism)So as you can see, there are a lot of mential illnesses in our combined gene pool. Are our kids at an exceptionally high risk? Thanks!
A: i am sure that there is a possibility of increased risk for anxiety, depression and addiction. not sure about the others. for addiction, they are less likely to become addicted if they don’t use the substance (like alcohol) before the age of 21. You should look for warning signs of depression and anxiety
