Q: How long would it take for the skin to decompose leaving bone and a skull for instance? If the body was left in the open air, say in a field, how long would this take? Its spring/summer and the field is a normal field in UK. No obvious animals except normal wildlife.
A: Depends on several things:What time of year it is. Flies and maggots help alot.Your location. Very dry climates can quickly dehydrate a body and slow or stop further decomposition. Wet but not too wet climate is best. Not those peat bogs you guys have though, they can preserve a body for centuries.Local scavengers, dogs, vultures, crows etc. help pick the bones.I would say several months in the conditions you mention to decompose the body to bones. If you want it done real fast, only a matter of days use Dermestid Beetles in an inclosed space.Good luck and have fun
