Q: i had an MRI scan on my head a little over 3 weeks ago, due to a little headache situation i’ve got going on and was wondering if anybody knew how long results took to come back, the radiographer said the neurologist would receive them in 7 to 10 days and i have yet to receive a follow up appointment, should i assume that everything is ok and they didn’t find anything?

A: The Radiologist reads the images the same day. A typed report may take 2-3 days, then they have to mail it to your doctor. If he is in a hurry, he can ask for a “wet reading” an old term from when X-rays came out of the developer wet. Means the Radiologist will call him the results immediately. FIgure about 4-5 days for a routine study.I always have them burn a disc, so I can see the images myself. That takes about a week to get to me. If the Radiologist sees something alarming,, he will call your doctor, as a routine.

A: Most MRI’s are read within 24 hours and the results sent to your doctor. He should have seen the results probably 48 hours after your scan. You are getting the run around, either that or they can’t find the printed MRI report that was sent to your doctor and that is why you are getting the run around. And, if this is usual from this doctor’s office, I would consider changing doctors (and, ask for a copy of this report for your records). Call them back and tell them you want to talk with this doctor about your test results – call them daily if you have to until you get the results.
