Yes DT, I get the foot cramps too. The fast guys don’t seem to get it, so it could be something to do with the length of time we’re out… Oddly, I too opted for an ancient Chinese remedy which involved, amongst many other things, beef and …

How can I fix my week-long foot cramp?
Q: I am an active 21-year old girl who works out two or three times a week. I have decent sneakers and wear a variety of other shoes with arches. I eat bananas often and drink tons of water. However a week ago, I started experiencing stabbing pains in the bottom of my foot, on the arch towards the outside. I kept thinking that it would work itself out but the cramp hasn’t gone away. I’ve rested it, used a heat pack, tried to walk/run/massage/stretch it out and nothing has helped. I’ve looked for other advice online but most people can see the cramped muscle and I can’t – it’s pretty deep inside my foot. When I massage my foot, I can’t feel pain. I also don’t feel pain when I don’t have any weight on it or when I’m barefoot. It’s less painful in shoes with arches than in shoes without.Has anyone experienced something like this? I’m concerned it’s lasted so long. Thanks in advance!
A: Well I’ve never experienced this, but are you sure it’s a cramp? I’ve never heard of a cramp lasting a week, but I’m no doctor so maybe it’s possible. I did some research and couldn’t find any other explanation except maybe a pinched nerve. If it is that, you might feel some burning like a cramp, but you should also feel some numbness in your foot like it’s falling asleep. Honestly I don’t know what it is, but if the pain gets too bad you should see a doctor. You can click on the link in my sources if you want more info about pinched nerves.
How do I get rid of foot cramps??
Q: I am a dancer and a few hours after class I start getting HORRIBLE foot cramps. I will be doubled over crying they hurt so bad. Other times they’re not bad though. They last a long time too. So I was wondering… how can I get rid of these horrible pains in my feet??
A: Part of the problem might be you aren’t stretching out your foot. It can kind of hurt but you should stretch out your foot if you don’t already. Also when it starts cramping point your toes towards you.. don’t bend them don’t to the ground- it can make it worse.
Really Bad Foot Cramps?
Q: Hello!I am, and have been suffering from horrible foot cramps for a very long time. I have moderate scoliosis(braced for 4 yrs 7 yrs ago)…however I also have very little arch to my feet (not quite ‘flat’ feet). Went to my orthopedist lately to deal with the cramps and a bit of upper back pain, and was prescribed physical therapy and a follow-up in October. I don’t have my PT evaluation until next week, but the cramps are occurring more and are disturbing my sleep. There are two kinds of cramps…the first kind I’ve had for about 5 years or so now…they only occur when I am wearing no shoes, or flat shoes (even if they have arches) and I try to do any non-walking physical activity. I took a Tai Chi class, which requires a bit of balance. I wore running shoes for the support, but had to remove them about midway through the class due to the cramps…which would still occur if I did it barefoot. This cramp runs directly down the center of my foot laterally (middle toe to heel), and feels like either side of my foot is curling downwards. The second type of cramp is the most serious. It has only begun within the last 6 months, and only happens at night as I am beginning to fall asleep. It is focused in the ball of my foot behind my pinky/ring/middle toes, and causes my ‘index’ toe to twitch. The cramp itself is extremely painful and I can’t alleviate it by massaging it or walking. It happens multiple times a night now in both feet, and usually keep me up for 10min per occurrence waiting for the cramp to subside. As said they only occur when I am beginning to doze off, or am in a very light sleep.Other info–I take daily vitamins (GNC ultra mega) and I love bananas, which I know have cramp-preventing potassium. I have one almost every day. I wear heels(w/orthotics) to work (sitting job) which my ortho says is ‘ok,’ because they ‘simulate an arch’ for my foot. I have never noticed a difference in back or foot pain from not wearing heels…and ONLY get cramps when I am either flat-footed or barefoot. I am also a toe-cracker and can do so very easily. Sometimes unconscious cracking/toe-curling leads to the cramp. Are there any exercises/stretches I can do to alleviate this pain? Anyone have any tips?Thank you Richard! I’m not as sure about the fatigue thing, like I said I sit at my job, and have a 2 hr driving commute…I just graduated college and am working full time so I’ve had no time to get to the gym during the day! I am currently very sedentary though I do try to get at least 6 hrs of sleep a night to avoid feeling exhausted. I will definitely try these exercises. Do you think heat/cold compress would help as well?
A: Krissie, I am going to suggest an exercise for you. From what you have stated it appears to be a fatigue issue of the muscles of the feet. They are working so hard that they become fatigued when you are not wearing the orthotics. Just try this and you should be able to notice a difference in the cramping problem. From either a long sitting position or lying on your back with the knees kept straight have the muscle of the foot pull them up towards the shins. The only action that occurs is at the ankles. You will know that this is working as there will be a pulling sensation in the calves. Hold that pull for about 10 seconds and then rest for a few. Repeat that about 5 to 10 times. This is best done right before you go to bed and right before you get out of bed in the morning. There is another movement that you can do if you feel up to it. Squat down so that the balls of the feet are on the floor and you are also resting on the knees. Keep the feet aligned straight under you. This will stretch out the entire bottom of the foot and that should also help you. To strengthen the arch of the foot place a pencil on the floor and attempt to pick it up with the toes. Or you can also do this by attempting to pick up a wash cloth or just scrunching a throw rug. Hope this helps!
