- A: I did not use tampons until after I was married, and as a result, it did not cause me any pain. However, I do know of other girls who have used tampons before becoming sexually active, and have said that it doesn't hurt. It will depend on how your hymen is shaped, if it allows a sufficient opening to the vagina or if it has been torn previously through sports, bicycling or having sex. In my experience I have found that playtex tampons or the "silk glide" tampons are the most comfortable to insert because the applicator is smooth plastic and the inner sheath slides smoothly to insert the tampon into your body. When my 16 year old daughter used a tampon for the first time, I advised her to first get a mirror to see where the tampon would be inserted. Then, with a little bit of lubricant, like k y jelly or surgilube on the end of the tampon, slide the tampon in. It should not hurt or be uncomfortable once the tampon is where it should be. You might want to start with the smallest size available if you have never used a tampon before. Ask the lady in the pharmacy for the junior tampons. Good luck
