A: My cat does the same thing. He wants me to bend over and pet him, but he doesn’t like to be picked up. For the first few months he was here, I would just pet him. After a while, he rolled over (indicating he trusted me) and I kept petting. A couple weeks later, I waited till he was in a standing position, then used both hands under his tummy to lift him and put him over my shoulder, and kept petting his back. He now tolerates that for a while, but then starts squirming so I put him back on the floor and keep petting. Eventually, I think I will be able to carry him around, but it’s taking time. I think your little guy just wants to be petted right now. Be patient, never just drop him back onto the floor if you’re successful in picking him up – the important thing if you want him to trust you is that he knows he can safely and painlessly get back to the floor after you pick him up. If he is young and hasn’t been neutered yet, he is not yet as affectionate as he will be after he’s neutered. When you bend over to pet him, move gently and don’t startle him.
