How do you explain this to a child?

Q: My father-in-law died from brain cancer a year ago and my young child is still very upset about it. We are Christian and explained that grandpa now lives in heaven with Jesus and God (in his mind they are 2 different people and we will address that detail latter). My son gets very upset anytime he is reminded of grandpa – listening to certain Christian artist, going to grandma’s house, or if he sees a picture of him. My son starts crying and gets very angry in these instances. He wants God to let grandpa come back. How do you explain to a young child that people don’t come back to earth once they get to go home to live with God? We have explained to our son that his grandpa still loves him and is watching him from heaven, but this approach just doesn’t seem to comfort him. Any suggestions?

A: How old is you child? This plays a huge part in their comprehension level. Have you tried reading a children’s version of the Bible. I think that if you explain to your child, that “Grandpa was hurting here on earth, and that God has taken Grandpa to heaven, so that he won’t hurt anymore. It is hard for a child to understand the concepts of death. Somehow tell your child that our bodies are just temporary vessels for our spirits to live in. And that when the vessels can’t carry us anymore, that our spirits Go to live with God. Good luck with helping your Child. I have 4 of my own. They are precious.
