can you die from pneumonia?
Q: my dad has it, and I’m really scared. All he’s been doing is puking. He went to the hospital last night at like 11:30 pm, and he was there for 7 hours.I’m really worried.my dad is 32, and yea he does smoke. he hasn’t been eatingI’m 13, and what am i going to do if my father isn’t in my life?
A: The vomiting with pneumonia does not make sense. There is probably some other reason as well. But in short, yes you can die from pneumonia. I see that he was already at the hospital. If he gets worse, do not hesitate to take him back. The best would actually be for them to see him in ED and to stop the vomiting with injections. Then they can get anti-biotics into him.
I have pneumonia, shouldn’t I go to the hospital?
Q: I’ve been very sick for a week. Yesterday, I went to see a doctor about it and he told me I have pneumonia. But he just prescribed antibiotics and suggested over the counter Robitussin cough syrup (for an expectorant), and said if I don’t feel better in 2 days to go see him again and then he will get x-rays and blood work done. I’m a bit worried though. If I have pneumonia, shouldn’t I be at the hospital to be monitored? how do I know I don’t have the H1N1 virus… or that am I going to get my twin babies sick too? But mainly, I’m concerned that maybe he should have sent me to the hospital. I always thought with pneumonia, you had to stay there to be monitored, maybe I’m wrong. PS: I’m 36, never had this before.
A: Hospitalization depends on the severity of the pneumonia and any complications. I had pneumonia last month and was treated at home with antibiotics. I am a healthy 31 year old. Take every precaution you can to protect your twins. Pneumonia in small children is very serious. I don’t think knowing if you have H1N1 or not would change your doctors treatment plan. All he can do is treat the complications that may arise from it. If you feel suddenly feel worse, have trouble breathing etc., seek medical help IMMEDIATELY.I know it’s hard with kids but please get some rest. And try to cough up as much gunk out of your lungs as you can. It’s gross but it helps. Take care.
