- Q: We were told today that my 85 yr. old grandfather has an anurism in his stomach and they won't operate because of his age and other medical problems. Are there any other options? - A: sounds like hospice might be the best plan.we just went through this with my husbands grandmother. she had an aneurysm in her abdomen as well, and she was 90 yrs old. we talked about it, and we as a family decided that it was best to make her comfortable for her final days an enlisted the help of a hospice nurse. they kept her comfortable on pain medications, brought her home, surrounded by family and familiar surroundings. when the time came, she simply went to sleep. we know she was comfortable because of the medications she received, and up until the time she fell asleep and didnt wake up, she was lucid, alert, oriented, and talkative to each of us.hospice nurses are really caring people who are very well trained in end of life issues. if surgery will kill your grandfather, and the aneurysm will as well, it is probably most humane and caring to ensure that he is comfortable in his last few days, taken care of by professionals who know how to maximize his comfort, and surrounded by family and loved ones. a social worker at the hospital can help you find a hospice agency in your area, or you can look up hospice in your yellow pages.i am sorry to hear about your grandfather.

- A: Being overweight can lead to high blood pressure, which in turn puts severe stress on the Aorta and other blood vessels.......an anurism is a weakening of the artery walls....lucklily it was caught in time, because some people don't have much of a chance if the aorta bursts.......I'm sure that the doctors will be watching him very closely for the next several months, to make sure that there are no other occurances. This would be the best time ever for your husband to change his eating habits, get a good regular exercise routine started (even just walking 25 to 30 minutes a day is good ) and to get his BP under control, if that is an issue. I wish you both well, and I think as long as he does what he is told to do so......he'll be fine...........he is a very, very, lucky man that this was caught in time.Good luck!!P.S. and to these idiots out here who think that an anerism is a clogged artery or vein........pls don't answer a question if you don't know what you are talking about!! Actually one of the responses was a little more correct than mine......When the artery wall becomes weak it will balloon out until it eventually bursts..........this is not a cause due to a clot or because of plaque build up!! Anerisms can happen in any part of the body, but the two WORST spots to have one, is number one the Aorta (that is what killed John Ritter) and also in the brain.......which unfortunatey happened to a dear friend of mine....she never had a chance.
