The higher the hiding ability the fewer coats of paint it should take to cover another color.Having been a painter for many years I got a lot of technical information on paints.All paints have Titanium Dioxide in them. It serves two purposes.1) It is what makes white paints white. The more the whiter the paint.2) Titanium Dioxide is also what makes a paint hide another color. More titanium dioxide means that a paint will hide another color better.Note: Deep colors do not hide other colors well as you might assume. This is because to make a deep color requires a lot of pigment. To put more pigment in the paint you must have room in the can. to make the room less titanium dioxide is used. Pigment is not opaque but is somewhat transparent. So the more pigment and the less Titanium Dioxide the more coats of paint will be required to cover another color.Problem is in this situation more pigment means an increased drying time. Sometimes days before it is totally dry. If you re-coat before the paint is totally dry it again causes you to have to use more coats.Hope this helps! email me if you have other paint questions.
