A: use a lotion like Eucerin with AHA, or Amlactin. They have light acids that will help dissolve the calluses. Just use them once a day or night, not constantly, or you’ll irritate your skin. During the rest of the day, use lotion with shea butter, or a thick cream like Neutrogena Norweigan formula. Also, consider putting a little sunscreen on the backs of your hands. The AHA creams will make you a little sun sensitive. If your calluses are really bad, use a glass foot file or microplane on them. Just gently rub a little bit every day. It’s not a sander. Don’t go too aggressively or the calluses will just regrow. just do a bit a day, and in a short time, you will have soft hands.

Q: I don’t know why my skin gets so rough and dry. I don’t work a manual labor job it’s just that my skin gets dry easily. I know I could probably use more lotion to keep my hands hydrated but is there any way to permanently get rid of the callouses I have now? I file them down but they seem to come back quickly.

A: The only way to make them go away permanently would be to discontinue the activity that causes them….but seeing as you don’t do manual labor I would suggest heavy moisturizer. Another trick my doctor told me is to soak my hands in water for ten minutes, then pat dry them and rub canola oil or crisco and put cotton medical gloves on. The gloves cost a little over a buck in the medical aisle. This treatment does work – I have severe dry skin from chemical exposure. Aside from that frequent moisturizing is essential. If this doesn’t help, see your doctor – it could be something a bit more serious that could require the help of medication (like mine did XP)
