Should I drain the blister on the heel of my foot?
Q: I’m trying to break in new shoes for my tennis season. I got a blister yesterday while running. It’s pretty big, but I was wondering how long it would take to go away. I have tennis practice on monday and I’ll be wearing those shoes again, but I don’t want it rubbing on the shoe. Should I drain it, or should I just leave it? And if I do decide to drain it, will it hurt that bad? I have no tolerance for pain. Haha.
A: Pop the side of it with a sterilised needle, drain and pop a plaster on. That usually does the job for me.Blisters that I have left “unpopped” tend to take longer to heal.Just make sure it’s clean!

How do I drain a large blister?
Q: I wore a new pair of sandals yesterday for a bit too long… I had them on for about 4 hours walking, and when I took them off I had a huge blister on each foot.I have to walk on the left sides of my feet and it’s really painful. The blisters are huge and water filled. What do I do??I can’t wear any shoes :(My mom said to drain them…Does it hurt??? HELP!
A: Sorry to hear about your blisters. I think doctors say it isn’t a good idea to drain them but if they are causing you problems and will probably pop anyway when you wear shoes it probably is a good idea to drain them. I don’t know if it will hurt but one way is to sterilize a needle by putting it over an open flame such as a candle or cigarette lighter. Wash your feet with soap and water and maybe soak your feet for a while in warm water and dry your feet. Take some gauze pads or sanitary napkins and pop the blister with a pin and use the gauze pads to drain the blister. After you have drained the blisters, place gauze pads or a band-aid over the blisters. It will probably still be painful to walk for a while.
