I rather doubt you have a bruised kidney as the trauma would have had to be very significant and a fall would not likely do this unless you had a high speed impact or fell off a ladder. Even if your kidney is bruised, a negative urine analy...

Would falling on concrete stairs cause your kidney to shatter?
Q: A shed fell on my son back in 2005, and in 2007 he fell up some stairs and was in horrible pain. I took him to emergency, where we were told the his kidney was severely damaged to the point of having 20% functioning on one of his kidney. I want to know if this could have possible due to the shed falling on him two years ago, that could have bruise the kidney and the fall cause the kidney to erupt on impact with the stairs? What's your opinion?
A: OK first...There are huge major arteries going into the kidneys. If your son "ruptured" or shattered his kidney, he would've been stone dead by the time you even got him in the car, much less got to the emergency room. Second...You took him to the ER for a fall, and they examined his KIDNEY values? There's a huge part of the story missing, it sounds like.and last, ..people fall DOWN the stairs.
Is it possible to bruise your kidney?
Q: While sitting at my desk I leaned over to reach for something. The arm of the chair was pushing into my left side, All of a sudden I felt something pop. It felt like something was push out of the way and then popped back into place (kind of like a rubber band). I thought it might have been a muscle. There was some slight bruising, There was very little swelling, but I am experiencing some pain when I bend over or put any type of pressure on my left side (lower left side of the body, not the back. When I wake in the morning it is painful lifting myself to get out of the bed. I would like to think that it 's a strained muscle, but it doesn't feel tquite the same as a strained muscle. Most of the pain is restricted to the left side, and there is a small spot on the lower back that is painful. Could I have bruised my left kidney? This happened 4 days ago. I am planning on contacting the doctor tomorrow. But I don't know how soon I will be able to get an appointment. Any thoughts on this?
A: I rather doubt you have a bruised kidney as the trauma would have had to be very significant and a fall would not likely do this unless you had a high speed impact or fell off a ladder. Even if your kidney is bruised, a negative urine analysis would not eliminate the possibility of a bruised kidney. You would need to have an imaging study of your kidney to detect a bruise (like a CT scan or an ultrasound). I am not suggesting you do this because even if there is a bruise to the kidney (and I doubt there is) there would be no special intervention if pain was the only problem. More likely it is a bruise to the musculo-skeletal tissues in the flank. It could take several weeks to heal. If the pain is not diminishing but persists or worsens then have your doctor check it out.

Q: My boyfriend got hit in the side with a baseball. And now his chest is killing him,it hurts him to breathe. And so he went to our schools athletic trainer and he said he thinks he bruised his kidney. Now the pain is in his back. The trainer told him that its just like a bruise you would get on your arm and it would go away. Im really scared though. He has no way to get to a doctor bc his parents are outta town. Will he be alright?
