How can I tell if my puppy has pink eye or it is just irritated?

Q: I have a 2 month old pitt/catahoula leopard mix puppy, Shep, whose lower eye lid (in the past couple of days) seems to be getting pink. There doesn’t seem to be a discharge and it doesn’t look like “cherry eye”, from what I have seen thru pics on the net.
