How can I deal with Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter depression)?
Q: Every year it gets worse and I notice it more and more. This year it was like clockwork. As soon as the weather turned and the days got shorter I got extremely depressed after being so happy this summer. And living in Edmonton, It’s winter from October to April so It’s a long time to be depressed. What can I do to lessen the affects of this winter depression.
A: Yes get one of those special lamps. Also, wrap yourself up well, and get outside EVERY day during the daytime no matter the weather. For about 20 minutes or longer, go for a walk or do some outdoor activity. But walking’s the easiest and it’s good for your muscles too. You need that daylight and fresh air. Take vitamin D.
i’m 15. i think i may have depression but how do i know for sure?
Q: i know i should see a doctor but before i do that i want to make sure that i may have depression and this isn’t just normal.so i’ve been dealing with this for maybe a year and a half now. i go through these periods of sadness usually lasting anywhere from about a few weeks to several months. during these periods, i’m just sadder than usual. sometimes it gets really bad and i self harm to cope with it. i usually isolate myself from my friends and everyone at school and at home. sometimes i even get terrified of certain people talking to me unless i know them fairly well. i get very aggressive towards my family which causes problems at home. i feel very lazy and completely lack motivation resulting in my grades plummeting. i feel totally hopeless, like i have no future, i’ll never be happy, and there’s no point in living. i have no self esteem. i feel ugly. sometimes i don’t even want to go outside because i don’t want people to look at me. i feel paranoid that secretly no one likes me. i never believe anyone when they tell me they love me. i think about suicide quite often and i’ve even gone as far as planning it in detail but deep down, i don’t want to kill myself. it’s not that path i want to take. i just want help.however, i lack some of the symptoms of depression. i don’t have any trouble with sleeping. sometimes i wake up super early (4 AM) but that’s only maybe once a week. my appetite hasn’t changed and during these periods of sadness, i’m not like constantly sad 24/7, only most of the time. i’m able to smile and laugh when something is funny and sometimes, for a few hours, i even start to feel kind of hopeful but it usually goes away. i also have no real reason to be depressed. my parents are good people and we have a lot of money and live in a nice house. so does that mean i don’t have depression or do i?
A: Hi, Self harming is bad and it needs some treatment. I think your’s is a case of mild depression or the beginning of depression. I have suffered from depression too and the symptoms were very similar to yours. The below situation.. “i feel very lazy and completely lack motivation resulting in my grades plummeting. i feel totally hopeless, like i have no future, i’ll never be happy, and there’s no point in living. i have no self esteem. i feel ugly. sometimes i don’t even want to go outside because i don’t want people to look at me.” … needs some treatment in the form of medicines or plain inspiration or willingness to act. Also, suicidal thoughts are not at all normal. If you are normal you should not be having them. By all means do see a doctor but you can also do some things to cure this. Do read some inspirational books or quotes. Let your family and close friends know that you are feeling like this. When you feel lazy, force yourself to do something. Try meditation. Hope that helped. Take care.
