A: First: a warm (not hot) shower, cool room (64 is optimum), chamomile tea, quiet music (something you know well). Exercise no less than 6 hours before going to bed, no caffeine, or alcoholic drinks, for the same amount of time, stay away from bright lights and tv for an hour (reading in dim light will not harm your vision) and try to stay on the same sleep/wake schedule each day. Everyone has a brief period later in the evening when they feel a bit tired but, instead of thinking about getting ready for bed, the first thing we do is check the time – if it’s 10:00, the first thought is, usually, “It’s too early to go to bed” so, we yawn for 15 minutes and then, decide to stay awake for another hour (which becomes 3 or 4 hours) so, try to go with what your body is telling you. It may take you a few weeks to settle into a pattern but, if you don’t, you should schedule a visit to your family physician to discuss your sleep problems as there may be a medical reason for this occurring.
