Q: I’ve had a terrible cold for the past 2 weeks. I cough and sneeze all over my dogs, but they don’t get sick? I’m glad for this, but am wondering why dogs can’t catch human colds?
A: That is a good question as mentioned before. I can give you a simplified scientific answer based on what I learned in school. Viruses have a proteins that bind to certains cells in the body and in some cases these proteins’ bindings sites are specific in each species. For example dogs can’t catch the cold virus from us because we they don’t have the appropriate binding sites that are needed to allow the virus to bind to cells in the body which is needed to allow the virus to replicate. What makes the flu virus different from many viruses is that it has the ability mutate these proteins until it is able to bind to cell in a different species. That is why there are cases of people with avian flu

A: The flu and colds are more common in the winter months because that is when the viruses spread across the country. It has nothing to do with being outside in cold weather.
