Q: My friend darn near died from a black widow spider bite 5 years ago. The reason for this was because she had a severe allergic reaction to the venom. After the poison had gone through every thing from her respiratory to nervous systems and a stay in the hospital with intravenous medications she was allowed to come home. She was bedridden for 2 weeks and her arm had swollen up to 5 times it’s normal size. she was on anti-biotics and pain meds but the one thing she could not seem to stay away from was root beer. All she wanted to drink was root beer. I was wondering if anyone has an idea as to why she craved this so badly.

Q: My sister found one in her house and is worried. I told her to call an exterminator and find out if the hospital can treat it, if she got bit. Don’ t the need to have anti-venom?

A: Technically yes. But it isn’t likely to kill an adult. Elderly, and infants have a higher probability of lethality from the venom of a black widow.Usually treatment wouldn’t consist of anti-venom.. but treating symptomatology , unless the clinic or hospital happened to have the anti-venom handy. It isn’t usually kept on hand, unless the bites are VERY common to the region. If she got bit, the plan of action would be (to be very over cautious) to call ahead to the local hospitals to see if they had the anti-dote, and if none did.. go ahead in for treatment.I am just a bit on the normal progression of black widow bites which usually need to be treated for feeling a bit ill, and not for threat of lethality.If she has compromised immunity, or illness,.. then yes – be very cautious.Also, it is very difficult to kill spiders.. an exterminator can help but a few cats would do a much better job. Black Widow Spider Bite?

Q: 4 Days ago i was bitten by a black widow spider, and this wasent my first time, its the 7th time this has happened. This time placing my arm under a saddle i hadnt used in a long time, i should have check first LOL I have also been bitten 3 times (3 different times) by diamondback rattlers…Im a venom attractor LOL and they havent killed me yet….Knock on wood…Ok heres my question…If anyone or if you know of anyone who has been bitten, what were the symptoms they or you had? How did they feel, how long it took to get over it, also would like to know if they got antivenom???? I could look this up or drive down the street to see the snake/spider dude from Animal plant show at Loma Linda Hospital, but different people have different things that happen to them personally and that what i want to find out…Something different happened this time to me and im curious.

A: I’ve never been bitten by a rattler or a Black Widow, but I’ll say this… sometimes reactions can change and get worse as you get older (even with bee stings). I would go see the snake/spider dude to be sure.
