Should i keep pulling a jammed finger?
Q: I was playing football the other day, and the ball hit straight into my thumb and jammed it. I was told that i should ice it and keep it elevated. (which i already know) but they also told me to keep pulling it. Will continuously pulling it out help it heal faster?
A: probably not a good idea without doctor input. When you jam your thumb there are two possible injuries...damage to the cartilage within a joint. A tear of cartilage will takes ages (possibly years) to heal correctly. Pulling on it will help circulation etc, but you can't pull it for that long.tear/sprain/damage to the ligaments that keep the joint aligned. If you have a tear you don't want to aggravate it by pulling on the joint. The only reason to pull in the short term would be if there was a pooling of blood in the joint. Then pulling would help with the circulation.
How to help a jammed finger?
Q: I was playing basketball, and I jammed my finger.Atfirst I tried to pull it back out (without thinking) and i thought it'd get better so i left it alone. Now it's blown up at the middle joint and popping up, and it's really big and in pain.I'm icing it, but it's turning more blue and purple by the minute.I can't bend it, or straighten it, so i'm a bit worried. Are there any home remedy steps i should take before seeing my doctor? Thanks.
A: Ice is the good home remedy. It sounds like the finger is disjointed. You need to see a Dr.
What is the best solution for a jammed finger?
Q: I play basketball a lot and I jammed my finger about 3 years ago. I thought it would heal itself but it is still swoll in the middle. I pull it all the time but it doesn't do anything. Should I splint it because I'm still actively playing and I dont feel like playing with a slint on my finger. Is there any other solution?
A: The only way to have it heal completely is to rest it, but that won't happen yet since you're active. To protect your finger, tape it up when you're playing. I think a split would hinder your play. When you're not playing, keep it splinted. You can take anti-inflammatory medicines like Advil. You could also ice your finger to prevent further swelling. This therapy is better than none.
